Public Service Announcement: Check Your Passport

The following is a Tuppenceworth public service announcement.

If you did your Leaving Cert in 1994 the chances are that your passport has expired. Do not discover this at 4.35am in Dublin Airport.

Inexplicably, 10 years appears to have managed to slip past. Don’t worry, I’ve already put a reminder in my phone for 2016. They won’t catch me that easily next time.

    Warning noted!

The logic being, that everyone who did the leaving in ’94 all rushed out en masse and got a passport in ’96. Interesting hypothesis.

I can only speak for myself, but when I was in college it would be usual for people to work their first summer in Ireland and then go on the big trip abroad in their summer after their second year- hence the time gap.

I’m clearly out of synch. I got my first passport at the age of 15 and my current passport has another five years to run.

In any case, I don’t discover my passport is out of date at the airport. I have a good idea about it six months in advance and deal with it then. That said, the only people I know who’ve forgotten about both their passport and their driving licences expiring are all men.

We can only envy your globe-trotting youth and admire your cold, cold adult efficiency, winds.

Not only did my passport expire (necessitating political intervention to secure an emergency replacement), but my driver’s licence has evaporated too. I thought I only got the thing yesterday.
